Counting Soul, Not Coins: Blues Corner’s “Piggy Bank Blues” Rings True

The first thing that hits you in “Piggy Bank Blues” isn’t the guitar; it’s the weight. That slow, grinding rhythm feels like the sound of another long week, the thud of boots on pavement, the clink of loose change in a nearly empty jar. Then the voice cuts through, warm, worn, and unpretentious, and suddenly you’re not just listening to a song about money. You’re hearing the price of keeping your soul intact.
That emotional authenticity is exactly what sets Blues Corner apart. Born from the creative bond between Phil Roman and Seb Oroval, the group’s music stands on the edge between tradition and reinvention. After years in the UK’s music industry, Roman traded boardrooms for backlines in 2021, returning to France to chase something real. Oroval, a self-taught guitarist raised on the great blues standards, brings a raw instinct that perfectly complements Roman’s lived-in delivery. Together, they have carved out a sound that feels weathered and wise, the kind of blues that doesn’t need nostalgia to prove its worth.
Produced by Bruno Dandrimont and recorded at La Battamobile Studio, “Piggy Bank Blues” strikes a rare balance between grit and grace. The guitars growl with intent, the groove rolls heavy, and every note feels earned rather than arranged. You can sense the Chicago current running beneath it, that electric pulse of the city, while hints of country rock melody lend warmth and motion.
Lyrically, it’s the blues brought forward into today’s grind: a reflection on financial strain, quiet sacrifices, and the cost of persistence. But rather than sink into defeat, the track finds pride in resilience. There is power in its restraint and poetry in its plainness.
As the first taste of Blues Corner’s upcoming double album, a two-part journey through Chicago Blues and Country Rock, “Piggy Bank Blues” makes one thing clear: the blues still speaks the truth, and Blues Corner are fluent in its language.
