What do you hear when the landscape disappears behind a veil of mist? A distant call? The hush of open ground? Or perhaps the quiet resonance of a guitar finding its way through the fog? Highland Mist feels like an answer to that riddle, not through words, but through atmosphere.

Martin Lloyd Howard approaches the guitar as both musician and storyteller on this evocative instrumental. Released on 1 August 2026, the Reigate based guitarist draws on his classical foundations while stepping into a distinctly Celtic sound, using DADGAD tuning on a Tanglewood steel string acoustic. The result has a natural sense of movement, allowing the melody to carry the mood rather than relying on production to create the illusion of place.

What makes the piece particularly engaging is its restraint. Howard records from his home loft with a single Rode NT4 microphone positioned close to the instrument, leaving the character of the guitar at the centre of the experience. There is something refreshingly direct about that approach. The performance feels close enough to touch, with the resonance of the strings giving the composition its warmth and dimension.

Howard’s background as a classically trained guitarist is never far away. Decades of experience sit beneath the fingerstyle playing, yet Highland Mist does not feel tied to tradition. His interest in folk, blues and rock adds another layer to an instrumental that is ultimately about atmosphere and imagination. Rather than simply presenting a Celtic inspired guitar piece, Howard creates space for the listener to form their own picture. The melody moves with a quiet confidence, balancing mystery with a sense of openness. It is music that invites attention without demanding it.

Highland Mist further establishes Martin Lloyd Howard as a composer interested in the expressive possibilities of solo guitar. Its understated recording, melodic DADGAD approach and cinematic sense of place make this a thoughtful addition to his growing catalogue.
