How long does it take to make a first album? Nine songs? A few years? Perhaps the better answer is a lifetime. Katya Redpath’s Time Changes Everything arrives with the unusual feeling of a door finally opening after decades of music, travel, family history and curiosity waiting on the other side.

Redpath’s recording debut in her 60s carries none of the hesitation that might be expected from a first full length release. Instead, the album sounds assured, adventurous and deeply personal, moving comfortably through Americana, folk, blues and roots music while allowing room for broader cultural influences. Co produced with Matt Smith at Austin’s 6 String Ranch, the record also benefits from Redpath’s involvement as a multi instrumentalist, giving the nine songs an intimate sense of authorship.

“Wake Up” immediately establishes one of the album’s central concerns: the search for truth in a world full of noise, persuasion and inherited assumptions. “Hot Mess” shifts the mood completely, bringing humor, attitude and a spirited sense of rebellion into the mix. “Put It in a Song” turns toward the restorative power of songwriting itself, while “The Phoenix” reaches into myth and poetry to consider destruction, survival and the possibility of beginning again.

What makes Time Changes Everything particularly compelling is the life surrounding these songs. Redpath’s background crosses continents, languages, academia, diplomacy, law and agriculture, with music remaining a constant thread throughout. Those experiences give the album a perspective that feels earned rather than manufactured. There is reflection here, but also playfulness, warmth and a willingness to follow an idea wherever it leads. The album’s later tracks continue that sense of movement, bringing together romance, cultural discovery, changing times and spiritual curiosity before “Sueño de Samba” provides a graceful closing note.

Time Changes Everything is more than a debut. It is the sound of an artist finally giving decades of accumulated experience a musical home. Katya Redpath does not sound like someone arriving late to the conversation. She sounds like someone who waited until she had something worth saying.
