Some songs disappear when a band falls apart, leaving behind little more than memories of the people who once sang them. Others wait quietly for the right moment to return, carrying meanings their writers could never have fully understood at the time. For The Joff Lowson Trio, “Fire on the Hillside” belongs firmly in the latter category, arriving as a remarkable piece of musical rediscovery shaped by time, experience and the enduring pull of Appalachian roots music.

Written by frontman Joff Lowson in 1990, when he was just 25, the song originally belonged to The Highfield Boys, a short lived band whose story ended long before this composition received an official recording. More than three decades later, Lowson has brought it back to life with guitarist Dave Brown and double bassist Mike Pryor, transforming an old piece of his songwriting history into something deeply personal. Musically, “Fire on the Hillside” captures the trio's natural chemistry through lively banjo work, warm acoustic guitar, resonant double bass and beautifully blended three part harmonies. Its bluegrass momentum gives the track an inviting sense of movement, while the traditional Appalachian character remains central to its identity. There is a refreshing honesty in the performance, with the musicians allowing the song's character to emerge through their playing rather than relying on unnecessary embellishment.

What makes this release particularly compelling is the perspective Lowson brings to words written decades earlier. At 61, he hears his own life reflected in a composition created by a much younger man. That connection gives the song an emotional weight beyond nostalgia, turning its return into a moment of reflection on identity, personal growth and the unpredictable ways creativity can follow us through life. With “Fire on the Hillside,” The Joff Lowson Trio deliver more than a long overdue recording. They offer a reminder that authentic songwriting does not lose its power with age. The result is an uplifting, spirited and sincere release that honours its musical heritage while celebrating the courage to reclaim one's voice, even after 36 years.
