SANTA CLAWS: “Sands of Time” Finds Its Strength in the Beauty of Imperfect Rock

How does a band measure the years it takes to find its voice? Not by counting the records released or the stages played, but by listening to what remains when the noise settles. For Santa Claws, the answer arrives in Sands of Time, a second album that feels less like a bid for attention and more like the confident work of musicians who have learned to trust their instincts.

Emerging from Brittany, France, the five piece outfit has spent nearly a decade navigating the realities of independent music, from lineup changes and interrupted touring plans to the patient process of rebuilding its sound. Those experiences give this eight track release a sense of earned perspective. Rather than chasing fleeting trends, Santa Claws leans into the qualities that have long made alternative rock compelling: strong melodies, expressive guitar work and the kind of natural energy that cannot be manufactured in a studio.

There is a distinctly British flavour running through the band's approach, where the melodic directness of classic guitar pop meets the restless edge of alternative rock. The influence of The Beatles, Oasis, Radiohead and Supergrass provides useful context, yet Sands of Time represents a group increasingly comfortable with its own identity. The expanded three guitar arrangement, strengthened by Stéphane Kérihuel's arrival, adds further depth to the band's musical character, giving its sound room to move between atmosphere, grit and melody.

The album's production choices reinforce that authenticity. Recorded independently in the band's own studio, mixed by guitarist Antoine Montgaudon and mastered to analog tape by Christophe Chavanon at Studio Kerwax, the record embraces a warm, organic finish. There is a welcome sense of musicians playing for the song rather than polishing every rough edge away. That approach suits a band whose identity has been shaped as much by perseverance as by ambition.

Following the band's 2018 debut, Life is a Lie, Sands of Time marks a meaningful step forward. Its significance lies not simply in the passage of years, but in the cohesion of a group that has weathered uncertainty without losing its creative drive. Santa Claws has turned experience into musical purpose, delivering a record that respects its influences while continuing to develop its own voice. With Sands of Time, Santa Claws makes a persuasive case for independent rock built on patience, conviction and genuine musical chemistry. It is a release for listeners who still value character over calculation and songs that reveal more of themselves with time.
