Suffolk based singer songwriter S J Denney returns with The Long Goodbye EP, a stripped back, self produced collection that channels the raw honesty and introspective storytelling of classic unplugged sessions. Having established himself across the UK and Republic of Ireland through years of live performances, both solo and as part of various musical collaborations, Denney has now delivered one of his most intimate projects to date.

Recorded entirely at his home studio, the EP leans heavily into the acoustic realm. With the exception of the grunge inflected lead single Weather the Storm, the record stays true to Denney’s original vision: a cohesive acoustic experience reminiscent of MTV Unplugged era performances. By forgoing digital polish and synthetic textures, he manages to preserve an organic warmth throughout the record, something that feels increasingly rare in today’s production heavy landscape.

Opening track Writer’s Block sets the tone with layered textures and nuanced instrumentation, including the surprising addition of a nagaswaram. Despite the title, the song bursts with lyrical clarity and melodic fluidity, suggesting that Denney’s creativity is anything but stifled. The track is followed by This Moment Has Arrived, a contemplative tune with echoes of Britpop nostalgia, but reimagined through Denney’s acoustic lens. There’s a sense of maturity and restraint here. His vocal delivery is measured, confident, and emotionally grounded.

Then comes Weather the Storm, a dynamic pivot from the acoustic serenity. The track’s grunge inspired energy crashes through like a tidal wave, bringing a darker edge to the otherwise mellow collection. Yet, rather than feel out of place, its placement mid tracklist serves as a powerful contrast and elevates the EP's emotional arc.

Closing track Old English Oak is where Denney's songwriting hits a cinematic peak. With its rich blend of banjo guitar and button accordion, the arrangement conjures a vivid, textured landscape. The track feels timeless, almost mythic, like a lost folk tale being retold in song. Hidden within the EP is a secret track titled Dead Wax, offering a final surprise that rewards those who journey through the record in full.

The Long Goodbye EP is more than just a collection of songs. It's a reflection of an artist in full command of his identity. S J Denney has crafted a record that feels personal yet universally resonant, proving that even in saying goodbye, there’s always something worth holding on to.
