Israeli R&B singer/songwriter Lorensa drops her newest EP, “Layers” - an emotional and honest take on love and heartbreak inspired by past relationships from her own life. Whether it is the whirlwind of questions you are asking yourself right after a tough breakup, or the confidence after making it through the breakup and being happy again for the first time in a while, emotions run high from beginning to the end of “Layers”.
As she makes her name known in the Pop and R&B world, Lorensa’s deeply emotional connection to her lyrics is an element of her music style that encourages the listener to immerse themselves into the song to not just hear but also to feel the gravity of the story being told. Lorensa’s vocal styles are similar to Sza, staying on the softer side and showcasing the natural singing talent that is signature to both of their sounds. Lorensa’s songwriting and singing talents in the R&B genre are excellent and perfectly fit for the sound she has developed.
Here is a synopsis of five randomly selected tracks that explore the range of performance that can be expected from listening to Lorensa’s music:
“Where’s My Sorry” goes into the inner dialog of a girl in the midst of running through the thoughts in her head trying to understand why the relationship had to end the way it did. Maybe she isn’t hurting enough to hate anymore, but she still wants answers.
“Strangers Instead” is a song that confronts the broken hearted with a bittersweet postmortem of the former relationship and revisits the memories of what it was, what was promised and whether future relationships are worth engaging in at all.
In the track “Went Thru Hell”, Lorensa sings her heart out in an emotionally charged declaration of her strength in the journey to the other side of the healing from losing the love that was supposed to last forever.
“Shirel” - This track shifts the energy back to an “Alicia Keys” sound with less of a struggle in the lyrics and more realization that the grass is greener on the other side, and despite the love and loss along the way, the journey was worth the pain to emerge stronger with a list of lessons from past relationships to set the compass for the next ones.
The songs individually can stand strongly on their own, but what takes this EP to the next level is how cohesive the sound and songs are and how relatable the lyrics can be.
Slay is a song about empowerment, where fake people and bad breakups are going to happen no matter what's happening in life. This “I’m fine without him” track is what you bring to your friend’s house and play on repeat while they all remind her how she is so much better than who dumped her.
The seven track “Layers” EP is a collection of the rawest of emotions felt through Lorensa’s delivery of the lyrics from a first person perspective. Whether it is life imitating art or the other way around, Lorensa’s heart and soul shine through the clouds of the not-so-happy endings experienced in each song. R&B music is already purposefully created with a vulnerable perspective, but it is Lorensa’s style that brings the listener in closer to the lyrics.
