Wilful Skilful’s “Ambitious” Is Dancehall Grit with Purpose

There’s something raw and magnetic coming out of Seaview Gardens again, and this time it’s Wilful Skilful with his new track Ambitious. I stumbled on the song late one night while scrolling through a mix of dancehall drops, and it stopped me in my tracks. There’s a pulse to it, a kind of fire that feels both familiar and fresh.
Produced by Dasvibes, Ambitious isn’t just another boastful dancehall tune (though it’s got enough swagger to make you feel ten feet tall). It’s more of a statement, an honest reflection of the hunger and fight that so many artists from places like Seaview Gardens carry in their bones. Skilful isn’t just talking about ambition for show. You hear it in his voice, the grind, the pressure, the unwavering belief that there’s more beyond the zinc fences and street corners.
What strikes me most is how much of his mentor, Dexta Daps, you can hear in his delivery, not in a copycat way, but more in the emotional clarity and storytelling. You can tell Skilful’s been in rooms with giants, soaking up game. Still, he’s carving his own lane. There’s a seriousness in his tone, but it’s never heavy handed. It’s the sound of someone who knows where he’s from, knows what he's seen, and knows exactly where he’s trying to go.
The beat itself is clean but gritty, classic Dasvibes touch. It rides that sweet spot between hard hitting and melodic, giving Skilful enough room to let his verses breathe. It’s the kind of riddim that makes you nod your head before the lyrics even hit, but once they do, it’s clear you’re not just here to dance, you’re here to listen.
And I guess that’s why Ambitious sticks with me. It reminds me of early Bounty Killer in terms of attitude, but also has a kind of reflective edge that’s more in line with today’s conscious wave of dancehall artists. Wilful Skilful is speaking not just for himself, but for everyone trying to rise out of the circumstances they were born into.
In a space where a lot of songs come and go, this one feels rooted. It’s not chasing trends, it’s chasing purpose. If Ambitious is a sign of what’s to come, then trust me, Wilful Skilful is just getting started.
