Brisbane’s boundary smashing cowpunk duo Wattmore are back with Romantic Side, a blistering new single that proves lightning can strike twice and possibly with even more voltage. If their debut Circus Life turned heads with its raw charm and cross genre bravado, Romantic Side doubles down, offering a razor edged critique of the dating industry wrapped in a high octane blend of country swagger and punk attitude.
Written by the ever unruly trio of Aiden and Kai Boak with country legend Allan Caswell, ‘Romantic Side’ is unmistakably Wattmore: loud, clever, and brimming with bite. The track is driven by a toe tapping, boot stomping rhythm that feels like classic country on the surface until the punk undertones punch through revealing a cheeky, unrelenting satire that tears into modern romance with both fists flying.
There’s no holding back here. Wattmore don't aim to charm, they aim to wake you up. The lyrics roll out like a rant you didn’t know you needed, taking shots at algorithms, profile pics, and the commercialisation of connection. But while the message is sharp, there’s humour and self awareness laced throughout, making it feel more like a barroom confessional than a lecture.
The production, helmed by Lindsay Waddington at LWM House Studios, is nothing short of stellar. With a roster of top tier Australian country musicians behind the sound, the track bursts with confidence. Every guitar lick and drum snap feels deliberate but unpolished enough to keep the edge intact with grit and realness.

Wattmore’s growing legend lies in their refusal to be boxed in and Romantic Side is a perfect example. It is country enough to play a rodeo, punk enough to rile up a dive bar and smart enough to get critics buzzing. The Boak brothers and Caswell clearly have a chemistry that works with sharp song writing, fearless themes and the kind of musical energy that feels impossible to fake.
As Wattmore push toward their debut album, Romantic Side doesn’t just hold the line it raises the stakes. This is country music with a crooked smile and a rebellious heart and it is exactly what the genre didn’t know it needed.
