Reetoxa Turns Personal Darkness Into Something Beautiful

A strange dream. A forgotten melody. A place that suddenly feels familiar. That is where Double A Side 2 (Akaroa / Erica And The Stars) begins. For Melbourne songwriter Jason McKee, the latest Reetoxa release is tied to two intensely personal moments that eventually found their way into music. What makes the EP compelling is not simply the weight behind its songs, but the way McKee turns those experiences into something spacious, melodic and deeply human.

Akaroa carries an almost dreamlike quality, rooted in an experience that stayed with McKee for years before returning to him during a visit to the New Zealand town that gives the song its name. There is an unmistakable sense of memory and mystery running through the track, with the music allowing its emotional meaning to unfold naturally rather than spelling everything out. Erica And The Stars travels into even more emotionally charged territory. Created during an extremely difficult period in McKee's life, the song became a creative lifeline. Its orchestral arrangement is central to its identity, with the Budapest Orchestra bringing to life the expansive sound McKee had imagined while writing. The scale is impressive, but the emotional core remains intimate.

The musicianship across the release adds another layer of distinction. Producer, mixer and mastering engineer Simon Moro assembled an accomplished team around McKee, with James Ryan of Men At Work on guitar, Peter Martin of Jet on drums, Kit Riley on bass and Terry Hart on piano. Jessica Mcpherson Riley of The Voice Australia contributes backing vocals, while the orchestral sessions were completed in Budapest. Recorded at The Avenue Recording Studio in Cheltenham, Victoria, the EP feels less like a conventional release and more like a snapshot of a songwriter finding his way through difficult experiences and coming out with something worth sharing. Double A Side 2 carries sadness, imagination and hope, but ultimately its strongest quality is its sincerity.
