NINEMANSION Preserves the Pieces of Love on “Hopeless Romantic”
What do you keep when a relationship is gone but the feeling refuses to leave? A missed call. A name that still carries weight. A memory that arrives without warning. Maybe heartbreak is not something we simply move past. Maybe it becomes an archive, quietly collecting everything we were unable to say.
That idea sits at the heart of NINEMANSION’s Hopeless Romantic, an intimate EP that finds the Portsmouth, Virginia artist exploring the uncomfortable space between losing someone and still caring about them. Rather than presenting heartbreak as a finished chapter, the project feels caught in the middle of it, where guilt, longing, silence and attachment continue to overlap. NINEMANSION brings an interesting background to that emotional territory. Beginning as a producer in 2020 before stepping forward as a recording artist in 2023, he approaches songwriting with an ear for atmosphere and sonic detail. His blend of emo plugg, digicore and melodic rap gives Hopeless Romantic a futuristic surface, but underneath that sound is something much more familiar. These are songs about wanting answers, replaying memories and trying to make sense of feelings that have outlived the relationship that created them.
One of the EP’s strengths is its restraint. The production leaves enough room for his melodies and vocals to carry the emotional weight, allowing the writing to reveal itself gradually. There is vulnerability here, but it does not feel exaggerated for effect. NINEMANSION often sounds like someone trying to maintain composure while privately wrestling with everything that has not been resolved. That makes Hopeless Romantic feel less like a collection of breakup songs and more like a personal record of emotional aftermath. The futuristic imagery gives his writing its own identity, while the emotions remain recognisable and immediate. There is growth in the way NINEMANSION handles that tension. He does not need to explain every feeling directly. Silence, distance and unfinished conversations are allowed to speak for themselves.
Hopeless Romantic ultimately captures what remains when love has nowhere left to go. It is personal without becoming closed off, vulnerable without losing its sense of artistic direction, and reflective without pretending to have every answer.
