In a time when genre lines are dissolving and authenticity is currency, Maverick Smith emerges with “We Make Fire, They Make Smoke,” a fearless and full-bodied rock album that isn’t afraid to sprawl across soundscapes, yet stays grounded in emotional truth and raw musicianship. Released June 17, 2025, this is the second full-length album in under a year from the Ohio Valley band. It signals not just prolific output but undeniable staying power.

From the first seconds of the opening track, there’s a tangible sense that this isn’t a band chasing trends. It is a group forging their identity in real time, song by song, with confidence and craft. The album’s production, led by guitarist and songwriter Sean Boynes along with longtime collaborator Dan Bozek, leans into the grit and spirit of live recording. Every track brims with organic energy, the result of a no-samples, no-shortcuts approach that runs through the entire record.

While many bands stay within a single lane, Maverick Smith creates a wide and open road. There’s no forced cohesion, but the record flows with a strong emotional and sonic thread. Each song stretches in different directions, embracing elements of punk, country, orchestral, garage, and alternative rock without ever losing the group’s identity. The arrangements are rich when necessary and minimal when the moment calls for it, always serving the song above all else.

The lineup itself is as focused as it is inspired. Vocalist Paige Bosic delivers performances that feel both vulnerable and bold, guiding the listener through moments of reflection and rebellion. Supporting her, the rest of the band, Sean Boynes, Jim Courtney, Charlie Kovach, and Chuck Ellis, plays with tight coordination and passionate execution. A variety of guest musicians expands the sonic range without overshadowing the core band’s signature chemistry.

Strings lift. Guitars spark. Voices rise and break. At its heart, “We Make Fire, They Make Smoke” is an album driven by honesty. It never imitates. It never pretends. It builds its momentum slowly and powerfully, grounded in something genuine.

As the sound of rock continues to evolve, Maverick Smith stands as proof that it still has something vital to say. Not because it follows familiar patterns, but because it captures something that feels real.

We Make Fire, They Make Smoke” is now streaming everywhere.
