Massimo Donelli and Paolo Rossi Give Ancient Values a New Voice on “Adorati Spiriti”
An old man has one conversation left to have. He knows his time is running short, yet what weighs on him is not his own ending. It is the question of what happens to everything he has carried with him when he is gone. Who remembers the stories? Who protects the values? And can a younger generation move forward without leaving its identity behind? These questions sit at the heart of Adorati Spiriti, the concept album from Massimo Donelli and Paolo Rossi. Drawing inspiration from Native American communities of the Great Lakes region, the record uses the relationship between Chayton, an elderly Cheyenne man, and Tokala, a younger member of his people, to explore heritage, identity, belief and the pressures of a rapidly changing society.
What makes the project compelling is its refusal to turn tradition into something frozen in time. Chayton does not demand that Tokala reject the modern world. His message is more thoughtful than that. He wants the young man to understand which principles still carry meaning and how they might coexist with a different future. That tension gives the album an emotional centre that reaches beyond its particular setting.
Musically, Adorati Spiriti reflects the breadth of its subject. Massimo Donelli builds the compositions across progressive music, jazz fusion and world music, while Paolo Rossi contributes the lyrics and helps shape the production. After playing together in bands when they were younger, Donelli and Rossi eventually pursued professional careers in journalism and politics before returning to the musical passion they shared years earlier.
