Powers of the Monk’s latest single, Bread & Circuses, is both unsettling and enthralling, a track that pulls listeners straight into the fractured perception of its narrator. Known for their adventurous blend of rock textures and conceptual songwriting, the Pontiac Detroit Ann Arbor duo of David S. Monk and CasSondra Pontiac Powers continue to push their artistry into territory that is as theatrical as it is musically compelling.

The song takes shape around the inner world of a schizophrenic patient, whose delusions spiral into a surreal vision of circus tents, lions, and collapsing order. The lyrics are vivid and disorienting, written with a cinematic eye that mirrors the instability of the narrator’s mind. Monk’s lead vocals carry just enough grit and unease to suggest both vulnerability and mania, while Powers’ harmonies add spectral layers that heighten the hallucinatory atmosphere.

Musically, the track is richly detailed. Producer Dani Macchi, known for his work with Italian band Belladonna, helps frame the chaos within a carefully structured soundscape. The arrangement layers acoustic guitars, processed electric tones, and eerie keys against the visceral presence of guest drummer John O’Reilly Jr., whose 15 track drum recording session lends the song its dynamic heartbeat. From the ticking stopwatch textures to the roar of lions, every sonic element has a place in the world building of the track.

What makes Bread & Circuses stand out is not only the subject matter but also the band’s refusal to romanticize it. Instead, Powers of the Monk lean into the discomfort, crafting a song that feels like both a narrative and an experience. It is unsettling, yet strangely beautiful, an anthem for chaos wrapped in the urgency of a rock composition.

With an expanding catalog that already includes genre shifting originals and reimagined classics, Bread & Circuses marks another step forward in POM’s evolution. It is music that invites listeners not just to hear, but to inhabit its world, however distorted that world might be.
