How far can someone travel before the journey becomes more important than the destination? And what happens when leaving becomes easier than staying? These questions sit quietly at the heart of “Runways,” the latest single from New Jersey songwriter Anthony Walker, whose thoughtful approach to Americana songwriting finds another compelling expression in this release.

Out October 30, “Runways” is the second single from Walker’s forthcoming album, The Wind & The Witness, scheduled for January 8, 2027. Drawing from folk rock and alt country influences, the song looks beyond the familiar romance of wandering and considers what gets sacrificed when the desire to keep moving takes precedence over building something lasting. Its central character is caught in a cycle of departure, gradually becoming less concerned with the connections and possibilities left behind.

What makes the song particularly interesting is the emotional perspective behind its subject matter. Walker does not present restlessness as an uncomplicated expression of freedom. Instead, he examines its quieter consequences, allowing the listener to consider the difference between choosing a new direction and avoiding the responsibilities that come with staying. There is an understated sadness beneath the song's premise, made more striking by the gradual loss of awareness surrounding everything being abandoned.

Walker brings a seasoned songwriting sensibility to the release, balancing the storytelling traditions of Americana with influences that extend into indie rock, folk, R&B and country. His ability to find wider emotional questions within ordinary human experiences has become a defining part of his musical identity, and “Runways” continues that approach with considerable thoughtfulness.

Produced by Mark Masefield and recorded in Asbury Park, New Jersey, the single also offers another glimpse into the creative landscape of The Wind & The Witness. If this release is any indication, the forthcoming album promises a collection shaped by reflection, uncertainty and the complicated nature of human connection. “Runways” is a thoughtful addition to Walker's catalogue, leaving behind a question that lingers long after the journey ends: sometimes, is moving forward simply another way of leaving something behind?
