Midwest outfit The House Flies return this fall with Sweet Foxhound,” their first new single since 2024’s Mannequin Deposit. It’s a track that captures the essence of the band’s sound, shadowed, restless, and steeped in a dark melodic intensity, while pointing toward a heavier horizon.

From the opening bars, Sweet Foxhoundmoves with an uneasy momentum. The guitars cut in layered, spectral tones that seem to shimmer and decay all at once, underpinned by a bassline that pulses like a heartbeat on edge. Drums drive the piece forward with a steady insistence, giving the song both urgency and space for its atmosphere to expand. The vocals are strikingly delivered, part haunting incantation and part plea, circling the arrangement with a spectral presence. Together, these elements create a track that feels hypnotic yet bristling with tension, an evocative continuation of The House Flies’ evolving sonic identity.

There is also significance in what this release represents for the band’s trajectory. It marks the first official recording with guitarist Burnie Eckardt, whose addition builds on the trio of Alex Riggen (guitar and vocals), Ozzie Woods (bass), and Nick Pompou (drums). Originally performed live around the Mannequin Deposit era, Sweet Foxhound has since been reshaped and fully realized in the studio, bridging past work with the darker, more expansive ideas currently fueling their next album. That sense of transition is palpable in the music itself. The song feels like a doorway, one foot planted in the familiar gothic textures fans already know, the other stepping into deeper shadows.

As a stand-alone single,Sweet Foxhound holds its own with confidence, but its real intrigue lies in what it hints at. The House Flies are openly shaping a longer, heavier record, and this track suggests that whatever comes next will magnify both the atmosphere and the weight of their music. For a band that thrives on tension, mood, and resonance, the prospect is enticing.

Sweet Foxhound is available on all major streaming platforms.
